MERCON® ULV (Ultra-Low Viscosity):

• This is a proprietary Ford Motor Company automatic transmission fluid specification.
• It’s the latest and lowest viscosity in the MERCON family, even lower viscosity than MERCON® LV (Low Viscosity) and the older MERCON® V.
• Designed for Modern Transmissions: MERCON® ULV was developed in conjunction with newer, highly efficient Ford automatic transmissions, particularly the 10-speed automatic transmissions (like the 10R80) found in many modern Ford vehicles (e.g., F-150s, Mustangs, Explorers).
• Fuel Economy Focus: The “Ultra-Low Viscosity” is a key characteristic, as thinner fluids reduce parasitic drag within the transmission, contributing to improved fuel economy and reduced emissions.
• Not Backward Compatible: Like other modern, specific ATFs, MERCON® ULV is NOT backward compatible with older MERCON® specifications (like MERCON® V or MERCON® LV). Using MERCON® ULV in a transmission designed for an older, thicker MERCON® fluid can lead to serious operational problems or damage due to insufficient film strength, improper friction characteristics, or seal incompatibility.
• Often paired with DEXRON ULV: As we discussed, Ford and GM collaborated on the development of many of their newer 10-speed transmissions, and as such, their ULV fluids (MERCON® ULV and DEXRON® ULV) share similar ultra-low viscosity properties, though they are still distinct and generally not interchangeable unless a specific multi-vehicle ULV fluid explicitly states compatibility for both.
